Suet feeders use  wire cages to hold the block of suet which is a form of animal fat mixed with dough or other ingredients to give it form. A roof or cover may be incorportated in the suet feeder to keep out the sun which would otherwise melt the suet.  Suet feeders should be hung in a shady spot toavoid this problem.
