Platform Bird Feeders (Platform Feeders)

Platform feeders are suitable for the majority of small birds including finches, sparrows, doves, jays, larks, titmice, chickadees, grosbeaks, nuthatches and many others.  The platform feeder category has the most varied designs - some are in the shape of houses, light-houses, statues, and almost anything imaginable.  Most platform feeders will incorporate a roof or dome to keep the seed dry and a hopper to hold perhaps a pound or two of seeds.  The shape and type of perches will to a large extent cater to a particular type of bird, e.g. a sharply angled  perch will exclude most larger birds such as jays while conducive to the more acrobatic gold finches.

While most plafform feeders cater to small birds, there are also specially designed large bird feeders in the platform category.  These are typically ground level or slightly elevated ground feeders used for pigeons, doves and other similarly large birds.
